Framing

How We Frame

Framed orders are fitted by hand in our Failsworth workshop. A 15mm moulding with a wood grain finish, in black, white or natural wood, glazed with shatterproof acrylic instead of glass.

The frame

Three finishes: black, white and natural wood. Black is what most people choose for a star map, since a dark frame around a dark sky reads as one object. White lifts a location map. Natural wood suits a room that already has wood in it.

Whichever you pick, it is a 15mm moulding with a wood grain finish, sourced in the UK. Slim enough to frame the print without competing with it, and deep enough to hold its shape at 60x80cm.

Safety acrylic

Frames are glazed with shatterproof acrylic, the material also sold as Perspex, instead of glass. We switched because too much glass arrived cracked, and a broken frame is a ruined gift however quickly we replace it.

  • It survives the post, and it will not put broken glass on the floor if a frame ever comes down.
  • It is lighter, which matters a lot at 60x80cm and is kinder to your wall fixings.
  • It is optically clear, so you are not losing detail or picking up a colour cast.

Frames arrive with a protective film over the acrylic. Peel it off when you unwrap it. If it looks hazy on arrival, that is the film.

Hanging it, or standing it up

The fixings are already fitted to the backboard, so there is nothing to buy and nothing to assemble.

An A4 frame with its strut, next to a larger size with wall brackets.

A4

Has a strut backboard as well as two wall brackets, so it will stand on a shelf or a bedside table without being hung.

30x40cm and larger

Two heavier wall brackets on the backboard, so the frame sits flat and level instead of leaning off one central hook.

If you would rather not drill, we sell adhesive strips cut to fit. They hold a framed print and come off without taking the paint with them, which makes them the sensible option in a rented flat.

All five Picture the Stars frame sizes stacked together, from A4 up to 60x80cm, in black

All five sizes together, A4 at the front through to 60x80cm at the back.

Sizes on a screen mean very little. Seen next to each other, an A4 is a desk piece and a 60x80cm is what anchors a wall.

Fitted here, packed to arrive intact

Framed orders are assembled in the workshop, not sent out as parts. The print is mounted square, the acrylic is cleaned before the backboard goes on, and the whole thing is checked as a finished object.

Then it is packed for a courier: bubble wrap around the frame, protective card corners where damage always starts, and a rigid outer box so it cannot flex.

Like every order, it goes out in discreet packaging with no branding on the outside and no paper invoice inside.

Gift wrapping

Most framed orders are going to somebody else, so you can add gift wrapping to any frame. It is wrapped here and finished with a bow, ready to hand over as it arrives.
